Strong Sprinting by CVTC at World Championship Trials

The Callaghan Valley Training Centre came out swinging in the Saturday sprints at U23 and Junior World Championship Trials.  The team placed three men in the top-10 of the junior event and qualified eight of nine athletes into the heats.

The Junior Men were the story of the day with Colin Ferrie, Paul Dupuis and Sebastien Dandurand all placing in the top-10.  Paul Dupuis, despite coming down with a stomache flu on the morning of the event and woofing his cookies five times throughout the day, finished 5th.  Perhaps five was his lucky number as he struck it in a couple of ways.  Colin Ferrie also suffered some bad luck in his semifinal, breaking a pole at the start and making up approximately 8 seconds to catch the field and finish third in the heat.  Unfortunately for Ferrie, the heats were all timed and Ferrie's time was not fast enough to qualify to the final as a lucky loser. 

"Overall the classic sprinting event went better than expected, given the strengths of the individual athletes," commented Coach Chris Manhard.  "Our results could have been still better, but we're all looking forward to the distance event tomorrow.  Many of the guys said they felt stronger as the day progressed today, so that bodes well for a distance event."
